What is an AGMARK Registration?

AGMARK or Agricultural Mark is a certification mark that is employed on agricultural products in India assuring that they comply with rules and standards approved by the directorate of marketing and inspection, an agency of the government of India. The term Agmark was derived from joining the words ‘Ag’ which means agriculture and ‘mark’ means certification Mark. It was legally enforced by the Agriculture produce(Grading and Marking) Act of 1937 and the head office of Agmark (Agriculture Mark) is located in Faridabad (Haryana).






Agmark of Agricultural mark helps to certify all the agricultural products before releasing it in the market. Currently, this mark covers 205 varied categories of agricultural products and commodities including pulses, Essential oil, Vegetable oil, fruits and vegetables, Cereals and other semi-processed commodities. This Agmark certification is extremely significant for all retailers and whole sellers across the country to sell their products to a huge variety of customers.

In addition to Central Agmark Laboratory (CAL) there are several regional Agmark Laboratories (RAL) which are located at 11 nodal cities below:

Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Kochi, Kanpur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Guntur, Rajkot, Bhopal). You must have noticed that each of the regional laboratories specializes in the products of regional significance. For example, a lab located in Mumbai is only bound to test sugarcane and cannot be used to test the pulses and rice this is because sugarcane is the main crop grown in Mumbai, not rice and pulses.

Agmark symbolizes Quality and Authenticity. It represents the seal of trust from the government that the concerned product is safe and does not contain any chemical products which are not exceeding the permitted limit of chemicals allowed in the product.

One of the reasons why agmark plays an important role in the market is mainly because consumers do not have the knowledge to check through all the ingredients of the products that are sold in the market. Therefore, Agmark is employed on the products which assure them about the quality of the product.

Documents Required for Agmark Certification

  1. Name of that product for which the applicant wants the standard

  2. Name and address of the organization

  3. PAN card of individual or business

  4. Address proof of business premises such as utility bills

  5. Trademark registration certificate

  6. Details of machinery such as power, quantity, and capacity

  7. Turnover of the company for last year

  8. Copy of registration of a company such as a copy of documents issued by the registrar of companies

  9. If the applicant is a company in that case copy of Memorandum of association

  10. In case the applicant is a partnership firm than a copy of partnership deed in which the firm and partnership law is mentioned.

Process for Agmark certification

  • The first step in the process for agmark certification is preparing the documents required.

  • After that visit the nearest agmark authority and fill the form.

  • Then submit the hardcopy of application along with the documents.

  • After reviewing the required documents an inspection team will visit the physical site for inspection

  • On successful inspection, Agmark certification will be issued.

  • Agmark certification is issued within 30-40 days of application submission.

Agro- products that require AGMARK Certification

There are around 222 Agricultural products including Cereals, Rice, pulses, vegetable oil, Fruit and vegetables, etc which require Agmark certification. The authority issues the agmark certification only after the complete inspection of agricultural products. The testing phase in the laboratories includes Chemical analysis, Microbiological analysis, Pesticide residue, and aflatoxin analysis. It is mandatory for Ground spices, Whole spice, Butter, Ghee, Mustard oil, Honey, Gram flour, Bengal gram, Soybean seed, Ginger, Non-edible oil, Meat, Animal casings, and many other products.

  1. Agmark certification was a voluntary certification unless it was made compulsory according to the provision of food safety and standards Regulation 2011.

  2. It is a quality certification for agricultural products produce in India, Under the agricultural produce Grading and Marketing Act, 1937 amended in 1986.

  3. The government of India has introduced different grading standards for different agricultural products that are implemented on the state level.

  4. The grading standards are fixed keeping in mind the requirements of WTO which makes the products comparable in the International market.

  5. The products having Agmark must conform to the standards that are laid down by the Directorate of Marketing and inspection. Breaching this may require the free replacement of graded products by the producer.
